DC's Custom Xnews Icons

What is Xnews?

Xnews is a powerful 32-bit freeware newsreader for Windows® 9x/NT/2000/XP written in Delphi by Luu Tran. It is 100% GNKSA 2.0 compliant and boasts a wealth of advanced features and seemingly limitless configurability.

Xnews is my newsreader of choice. I use it on a daily basis for reading usenet news and feeding my growing addiction to collecting desktop wallpaper.  }:O)

On those somewhat rare occasions when I am not scouring usenet for pictures of big cats, I can be found tinkering with graphics programs, icon editors and resource explorers.

This web site is a product of my passion for Xnews and my nascent hobby of graphics editing.

About this site...

Since the release of Xnews L5, toolbar icons come in the form of extractable resources instead of being hard-coded into the executable. For the first time, Xnews' button icons can be extracted and saved as editable resources, then modified freely with a graphics editor.

I built this site to showcase what can be easily achieved, with a bit of patience, using a resource editor and a suitable image manipulation program to customise a variety of Xnews' program icons to suit individual tastes. I will also touch briefly on the use of custom user buttons and server icons to complete the transformation. Of course, I am also making my work available for download.

Keep in mind that I am far from an expert in graphics editing -- anyone can do this. I am just giving you a taste of what is possible with a bit of imagination and the right tools for the job.

This is the second edition of this web site, with a brand new design and layout, and hopefully I will have succeeded in making it as pleasing and informative as possible.

Happy tweaking!
