DC's Custom Xnews Icons

Resource Editing Tutorial

Step 3 - Rebuilding The Executable

The final step in the process is to substitute the lvimages.bmp in Xnews.exe with the new one that you have created.[1]

  1. Once again, open Xnews.exe in Resource Hacker;
  2. Locate the BITMAP:LVIMAGES:1033 resource;
  3. From the Action menu, select Replace Bitmap...;

Figure 5

  1. Select lvimages_new.bmp from your working directory and click Replace. You should now see your new icons in the right pane; and, lastly
  2. Go to File > Save As... and save your project as Xnews_new.exe.

That's it, you're done!  }:O)

In order to test your new toy, first close Xnews if you have it running. Then, copy Xnews_new.exe to your existing ..\Program Files\Xnews\ directory (your new program will use all of your existing preferences). Double-click to launch, and...Voilà!

If everything went according to plan, this is what you should see:

Notes

[1] The repetitive task of substituting resources using Resource Hacker can be greatly simplified by automating the process using a batch and script file combination. To learn more about using scripts to modify Xnews' resources, please refer to the Resource Hacker help file. You may also refer to the dcico_mod.bat and dcico_script.txt files (included in my custom icon distribution) for a working example.  download »
